the big event of the day was certainly the announcement that Edward McMillan-Scott was joining the Liberal Democrats. It was quite a surprise to me - and a pleasant one. EMS has a very good reputation. He is certainly someone taken seriously by anyone who has worked with him. His dispeasure at the Cameron policy of pandering to extermists (as he puts it) is well-known).
But it seemed likely that the PPE group would prove an acceptable home for him in the European Parliament. His decision to join the Liberal Democrats seems to be in large part inspired by his regard for Nick Clegg (with whom he has had contact both in Brussels and in Yorkshire). It is a big boost as Liberal democrats gather for the Spring conference (without me this time - I am staying in Southend).
And here in southend I have been knocking on doors with a large team, slightly hindered by the rain. Fortunately some thinking on our feet found us a dry spot to contiue kncking on doors when it got too wet.
We have had a good week. I feel that we got some serious work done. I'm looking forward to the weekend sessions.
